A record company is a company that manages recording related brands and trademarks. The company has ownership of their labels, the master recordings, and other businesses such as promotional DVD's and even books.

What is a major record label?
A company who owns its own distribution channel
- Signs, market, develop, publicize and promote whilst providing sales support to larger distribution companies for their releases and artists.
- Artists signed to a major record label pay for: packaging, promotion(discounts, free CD's), overseas promotions, music availability and even breakages.What is an independent record label?
A company who is not under the control of one of the 4 major record companies.
- A smaller recording company.
-Releases non-mainstream music
- Has no funding from major record labels
- Can still be under the control of a large corporation
- can have major label shareholders
