How analysed music videos use typical conventions

After analysing three music videos from the indie genre it was clear to see how they all used conventions in different ways to portray their creativity and make them unique. Black mirror by arcade fire was the most original video out of the three as it had a very dark and eerie style to it making it appear like a scene from a horror film. This was done through the use of black and white filters and out of place images such as an old mans head. From the appearance alone of the video it differed greatly from the other two which are full of colour and have a sixties vibe to them through the use of exaggerated pop art colours. This video used typical conventions of the indie genre such as:

- Filters
- Had a narrative video
- Appeared from an earlier date through clothing and gritty effect which looked like it was filmed on an old film camera.

Similarly, 'Common people' and '59' also use filters to emphasise the colours to make them more distinct and also to make the lighting bright to give the song a happy atmosphere. However, both focus on the image of the artist through the use of close up shots and shots of the band performing whereas Black mirror features no images of the band whatsoever. This portrays how 1990's and Pulp are trying to sell their image to an audience, pulp more so than the 1990's as they are dressed in fancy suits and look more glamorized in comparison to 1990's casual everyday attire which isn't as appeal as expensive suits. Both songs go for a similar sixties theme which is again a convention of the indie genre to make the video look like it has been produced from an earlier date. This is clearly identifiable through the disco set in pulp and the brightly coloured sixties styles clothes in both pulp's music video and the 1990's music video.

How they have inspired our ideas
Firstly, we want to stick to the convention of making our video look like it has been produced from an earlier period ,in our case the 90's, thus we will be feature easily identifiable clothing from the 90's to convey this. We also want our video to be bright and have an upbeat vibe to it like pulp's common people music video therefore we think it'll be a good idea to feature bright colours and possibly alter the lighting and colour of the videos to make them look brighter and emphasised.

As for the artistic side of our work we want to go for a similar style to the 1990's 59 music video but instead of making the video look like a collage of magazine cut outs we intend to produce plasticine models of our band incorporate them into the video along with real life imagery of the band. We also wanted to produce a stop motion, like the 59 video, to allow our models to move and be able to tell a narrative through the video. Like the music video for black mirror we currently intend to not feature any live performances of our band and use the band members more as actors to tell a narrative through the video.
