blur coffee and TV

Since our music video is animation based I decided to look at an existing music video which would help inspire our ideas. Coffee and Tv is narrative music video which follows a milk carton on a journey to find a boy and bring him home. From the opening shot we can see a family looking depressed and upset which is signaled through the mise-en-scene and their miserable facial expressions. From the props revealing a framed photo of a boy and the cinematography focusing on a missing photo of the same boy on the side of the milk carton which suggests it is the families son who is missing.

The milk attempts to cheer the family up by dancing however, his attempts are ignored thus he decides to leave on a journey to find the son to bring the families happiness. The use of the micro features helps the audience to easily identify what is going on such as the mise-en-scene portraying the 'missing' photo on the side of the milk and the cinematography closing up on it. This is followed by a cut of the sad family. This is very helpful for our narrative on the Plasticine band trying to become the real tonic band and we will be using the same technique, of having a close up shot of a tonic concert poster followed b y the Plasticine band staring up at it.

Goodwin's theory has then been applied to the video, due to the lyrics linking with the visuals. 'take me away' whilst the milk carton climbs on the back of a motorbike and is being taken away. The rest of the video is simply a narrative of a milk carton trying to bring back the son however, his whole journey is swarmed with obstacles which are life threatening to him as a milk carton. These include humans, other cans/cartons and traffic. This simply narrative is similar to the one for our music video which is also a journey. However, ours is to get to a performance.

Although, the whole video focuses on the milk carton the band is featured for a short period of time. This meets Goodwin's theory of meeting the demands of the record label as having the band appear allows their image to be sold and also portray the indie genre as a performance is a common conventions of that genre. After watching this music video I want a real band featured within the video as it breaks the repetitive style of the video and also meets the conventions of the indie genre. Therefore at the end of the video I want the real band to come into the video and destroy the Plasticine men so they can perform. I also like how the appearance of the band ties into the narrative and isn't a random clip as it's clearly identified one of the band members is the son thus the milk carton has succeeded.
The milk then gets drunk and sadly dies, similar to our music video idea, however the ending is still happy as he succeeded in making his family happy.
